Innovative Technology Protects the Waters of Sleeping Bear Dunes

by Amy Orzel

There’s absolutely nothing like summer at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. From splashing in Lake Michigan’s sparkling waves to paddling down the peaceful Crystal River and enjoying breathtaking views from iconic lookouts like Pyramid Point, so many of our best memories in the park are tied to its crystal-clear waters and the vibrant ecosystems they sustain. Each summer, thousands of us enjoy these places, often unaware of the dedicated National Park Service staff working behind the scenes to protect them. Through the Lakeshore’s Water Resources Program, National Park Rangers carefully monitor water quality to help keep these beautiful lakes, rivers, and beaches healthy, safe, and thriving all season long.

Now, thanks to new water testing equipment funded by the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the National Lakeshore’s Water Resources laboratory has strengthened its ability to continue monitoring water quality quickly and accurately throughout the park. Advanced DNA technology detects unsafe levels of E. coli bacteria in about three hours. That means faster water quality updates, quicker swim advisories when needed, and safer beaches for everyone enjoying the water during the busy summer season.

Another exciting benefit of the new technology is expanded monitoring of aquatic invasive species using environmental DNA (eDNA). Early detection is one of the best tools for protecting the ecosystems that make Sleeping Bear so special.

“The park started DNA-based water quality monitoring in 2014, and after that equipment reached the end of its serviceable life, the support of the Friends allowed us to buy new water testing equipment. We can continue to provide same-day beach monitoring results while expanding our ability to detect aquatic invasive species in park waters,” explains Chris Otto, Water Resources Program Manager for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

“We are also using the new equipment on a project studying invasive mussel populations on a chain of inland lakes and their response to population control efforts scheduled to take place in 2027. Thank you to all the donors who helped ensure these projects can continue, uninterrupted, into the future!”

The freshwater resources of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are at the heart of what makes this place so special to so many of us. The generous support of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes helps the park protect these extraordinary ecosystems. These investments will help safeguard our healthy waters, vibrant wildlife, and treasured experiences for generations to come.

Help us continue to fund protection for the Park. Advanced tools like this water testing equipment are only possible because of people who love the dunes. Your gift today ensures the Friends can continue providing the cutting-edge resources park staff need to keep our lakes, rivers, and beaches safe.
