Your Guide to the Best Beaches at Sleeping Bear Dunes

From secret coves to wide open stretches of the shoreline, the beaches of Sleeping Bear Dunes offer something for everyone. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to find peace or a family-oriented place to enjoy the beauty of the shore, this Lakeshore has it all. Here's your guide to some of the best beaches to reconnect with nature, walk, and relax.

The sandy stretches along Lake Michigan are some of the most popular in the park, and for a good reason. With multiple access points like Platte River Point, Esch Road, Glen Haven, and Good Harbor Bay, you’ll find endless opportunities for beach days and breathtaking sunsets.

Additionally, the Glen Lake picnic area and beach is right next to the Dune Climb. This beach on Glen Lake is perfect for not only a swim, but also a beautiful picnic. The shallow, clear waters make it a favorite for families looking for a calm, refreshing place away from Lake Michigan. A bonus, the water will be warmer than Lake Michigan in Glen Lake.

Just north of Empire, North Bar Lake offers something for any crowd: calm inland waters great for floating and playing, plus a short walk over the dune for you to take in the beauty and waves of Lake Michigan. This is a great stop for families who want a multitude of options.

Peterson Beach is one of Sleeping Bear’s more remote and less crowded places, offering a calmer and more relaxing environment. It is a great place to spend a peaceful afternoon of sunbathing, reading, or simply listening to the waves as the sun shines upon you.

If you’re up for an adventure, and want to embark on a hike first, Sleeping Bear Point is a beautiful reward. A short trail leads you to a wide stretch of shoreline with views of the dunes and open lake. It’s great for adventurers looking to escape the crowds and take in everything the Lakeshore has to offer.

The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes offer beach-access information and mobility options, including track chairs and wheelchair bikes available in select areas. Visit the Friends’ website for detailed guides and maps to help plan your beach visit with accessibility in mind.

Whether you’re planning a full day in the sun or a quiet morning by the water, Sleeping Bear Dunes has the perfect beach for your next adventure. See you on the sand!
