Why I love Being a Trail Ambassador

If you’ve spent any time out on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, you might have seen me cruising by in a bright orange vest! That high-vis look isn’t just a fashion statement - it’s my favorite way to spend an afternoon giving back to the park I love so much.
Being a Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Ambassador is hands-down one of the most rewarding volunteer gigs around. Here is a look into what my days on the trail look like - and why slipping on this bright vest always puts a smile on my face.
The absolute best part about this role? I get to volunteer however I like to move.
Some days I hop on my bicycle for a scenic ride through the woods, while other days I lace up my running shoes or head out for a relaxed walk. I’m already out enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking scenery - volunteering just gives my favorite outdoor routines an extra sense of purpose.
My main goal whenever I head out is simple: share good energy and be a welcoming presence on the path.
I make it a point to greet everyone with a cheerful wave and a warm “Good morning!” But I also keep an eye out for that classic “I’m not quite sure where I am” look. Whenever I see someone pausing at a map sign with a furrowed brow, I love rolling up with an easy, approachable “Hi there! How’s it going today?”
Whether someone needs directions to the Dune Climb, recommendations for a great family lunch spot, or just reassurance about how many miles are left to the next trailhead, I’m always thrilled to point them in the right direction.

Wearing the bright orange vest takes all the guesswork away for visitors. It instantly signals that I’m an approachable, safe person they can stop to ask questions about trail rules, park highlights, or local tips. It turns an ordinary workout into wonderful conversations with people from all walks of life.
