Ride, Walk, Explore: The Heritage Trail
By: Kaitlyn Kausler
Maybe you have always been curious about activities in the Glen Arbor area or perhaps you have even heard of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail before. Oftentimes, I get asked “so what is there to do in Glen Arbor.” Today, I will answer that for you and give you a brief overview of the trail and why you should take the time to learn about it.
The trail started small and has expanded to over 20 miles within the past few years ranging from Empire to Good Harbor Bay. There are many trailheads which makes accessing it, no matter where you may be within the area, practical. And guess what? The best part… the trail is like a playground for everyone providing a fun and enjoyable experience for all. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is mostly paved, making it great for walking, biking, and even pushing strollers or wheelchairs welcoming those of all abilities to the lakeshore while being a peaceful place to reconnect with nature.
Now, no matter how you choose to enjoy the trail, it is important to stay on the trail and be very alert out there. Always be aware of the wildlife and respectful to the people around you. Also, don’t forget your grocery bag or two for any trash you see!
A couple more things to remember, pack your water, put your sunscreen on, rock your favorite hat, and have a little cash in your pocket because grabbing lunch or dinner in Empire or Glen Arbor is a trail tradition.
Enjoy this adventure like no other!
