Pyramid Point Through My Eyes

By: Kaitlyn Kausler

There’s something about Pyramid Point that keeps calling me back. Out of all the trails in Sleeping Bear Dunes, it’s by far my favorite one, especially on those surreal, quiet, peaceful early mornings.

It’s not an easy trail. In fact, it’s short but intense. The first stretch climbs through a shaded hardwood forest. The trail winds and dips, then rises again. With each step you draw deeper into the woods and birch trees and are easily able to connect with the stillness of the moment.

The hike to Pyramid Point is just under 1 mile one way, but don’t let the short distance fool you, it gains elevation fast. Be ready to break a sweat; it’s steep and can be washed out or even sandy in many spots.

When I get to the top, no matter how many times I’ve seen it, it always takes my breath away. The trees open to reveal one of the most stunning views in the park, surreal, crystal blue, clear water. Lake Michigan stretches in every direction, with the Manitou Islands as well as the Fox Islands floating in the distance like something out of a dream. The soft breeze, the stillness, and the perfect light will always be my happy place.

Remember to leave no trace as you are around the area, and please stay on the marked trail, pack out everything you pack in, and resist the urge to descend the bluff. It’s steep, dangerous, and leads to serious erosion. Help protect this natural treasure for future hikers.

Pyramid Point isn’t just my favorite hike throughout the Lakeshore; it’s where I go to reset and clear my head. It’s quiet, grounding, and filled with beauty that feels as if the world hit pause just for you.

A Few Things to Know:

  • It’s steep: Be ready for a short but demanding climb with sand and elevation.

  • Respect the bluff: Don’t go down it, it’s dangerous and causes erosion.

  • Go early: Mornings are magic here. You might have the view all to yourself.

  • Leave no trace: Stay on trail and pack out everything you bring in.
