Kerry Kelly, A Donor Story, “Why Do I Give…”

“When a place or organization is really special to you, it’s important to invest in that thing. When we take care of special places, we set an example for our children and others to continue the work.” For Kerry Kelly, that has meant establishing and caring for a trail system that highlights the incredible natural resources in the park, and building a ground-breaking accessibility program with wheelchair bikes and track wheelchairs to make the park inclusive to everyone, regardless of their physical ability.

The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and Kettles Trail offer unforgettable ways to explore the iconic dunes, sun-dappled forests, and unique glacial features of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Each year, thousands of people adventure on foot, bike, snowshoe, or ski these trails. They soak up breathtaking views and develop a deeper connection to these beautiful landscapes, largely thanks to Kerry's unwavering dedication to the Friends for more than two decades.

Kerry is a long-term champion of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. His inspiring story shows what’s possible when you combine enthusiasm, dedication, and generosity to support a cause you are truly passionate about.

Kerry first connected with Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes in 2004, drawn in by a small but energetic organization whose leaders immediately put his passion for the park to work. He grew up in a family that had always supported community and natural resources protection, and his hands-on involvement at the park - from blacksmithing in Glen Haven and managing Adopt-A-Beach to supporting the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and Kettles Trail - reflected that commitment. His steady dedication naturally evolved into leadership as Chairman of the Board of the Friends, a role he held until 2024. Luckily for the park and the Friends, Kerry is still actively involved on the board as Chairman Emeritus and continues to contribute in a variety of impactful ways.

Kerry’s support reflects a belief in shared stewardship. “It is important to have lands that everyone can enjoy and experience. If places like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore weren’t here, solitude and experiencing nature in the wilderness would be lost to many of our citizens.” Kerry’s deep personal investment of time, skills, and financial support to the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes has left a lasting legacy beloved by visitors and residents alike. His dedication and generosity have helped to ensure that the park remains welcoming and inspiring for all for generations to come.
