| Flower |
Single large, dandelion-like,

notched at the tip and exceeded in length by the long, thin pointed bracts.
The flower stalk below the blossom is inflated and hollow. |
| Leaf |
Leaves are grass-like, simple
leaves about 12" long and about 1/2" wide. They alternate on the stem. |
| Notes |
Stems are smooth,
upright, and exude a milky juice when broken. Seed heads are large
round feathery balls (sometimes called "blow balls"). The flower opens
only on sunny mornings and usually close by noon. The long taproots
can be dug and roasted as a coffee substitute. |
