Flower Flowers are tubular, cream to yellow, stalkless flowers emerging from under compact scales.  The flowers and scales form a cylindrical spike.  Lower scales are overlapping, fleshy, pointed, and yellow to brown in color.
Leaf Scales instead of leaves
Notes Plants resemble a yellow or brown pine cone standing on end.  They are usually found in groups.  They are a parasite on tree roots, especially oak.
