False Solomon's Seal
Smilacina racemosa

Family Lily  (Liliaceae)
Bloom Spring, Summer
Habitat Moist deciduous woods
Status Native
Cycle Perennial
Height 16-36"
Flower Flowers form a cluster of many tiny star-shaped white flowers at the tip of a single long arching stem.  Clusters are 3-5" long and each individual flower is made of 3 petals and 3 petal-like sepals, giving the appearance of 6 petals.
Leaf Leaves are large and in a flat plane with a row on each side of the stem.  They are stalkless ovals 3-6" long, hairy underneath with heavy parallel veining.
Notes The stems are arched (neither upright nor reclining on the ground) and covered with fine hairs.  A spike flower cluster at the end of the stem distinguishes it from Smooth Solomon's Seal whose flowers hang beneath the stem.  The waxy red berries are not edible.
