D. H. Day
realized that the beauty of this area would provide a popular vacation spot.
In 1922 he sold a large portion of land between Lake Michigan and Glen Lake
to create a real estate development, called Day Forest Estates, on what is
now Alligator Hill. The development was supposed to include an 18-hole golf
course, air strip, and clubhouse, along with building lots. However, because
of the Depression in the 1930s, Day Forest Estates was never developed. The
golf course was open for a few years, and if you hike the Alligator Hill
trail, you can see evidence of the fairways and greens.
Michigan State
Parks Commission
D. H. Day was also the first
chairman of the Michigan State Parks Commission, and he donated 32 acres
along the Lake Michigan shore just east of Glen Haven to become one of the
first State Parks in Michigan. It is now the D. H. Day Campground of
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
