The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes

Board Meeting

 Wednesday October 11, 2006  9:00a.m.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore HQ Library

I. Roll Call:  Jack, Kerry, Roland, John, Eleanor, Chuck, & Tom.  Tom U. represented the Park.  Patty O'Donnell visited from NW Mich. Council of Govts.

II. Additions to the agenda:  None.

III. Minutes of the last meeting of August 17, 2006:  Approved.

IV. Treasurer’s Report (Attached):  John reported that all bills have been paid.  Report approved.

V. Committee Reports

         Report from Park representative:

The Park has been busy tallying year-end figures.

The Park recently received the State History Award for management of the Port Oneida Historic District.

GMP:  The latest news letter was mailed yesterday.  It includes four main alternatives.  (The final plan can be a blend of them.)  Park zone types are delineated.

Waterwheel canoe livery site restoration:  Scoping has begun

Planning for Overlook 9:  Will be beginning this fall.

Glen Haven & Pt. Oneida projects:  Their funding has been pushed back.  The Park has submitted Glen Haven for approval for fee money use.  Planning continues on Port Oneida.

DH Day cabin:  The roof will be fixed through NPS funding.

Trumpeter Swans were reintroduced this fall.

The Dechow, Kelderhouse, Peter Burfiend, Esch, and Eitzen Houses have been improved.

       Interpretation had a good year.

Boat ramp:  Glen Arbor Twnshp is anxious to move it.  They like the Glen Haven site.  NPS does not believe Glen Haven is appropriate.  Area ROW's are being researched.

Proposed bike path through the Park – Presented by Patty O’Donnell, from NW Michigan Council of Governments:

They are applying for grants for environmental assessments.  They need a 501 (c)(3) organization to be the fiduciary agent to receive the grants.  It was felt that this is the sort of thing we are designed to do.  A motion to do so was approved.

         Update of two web sites—Kerry:

Friends web site:  No major changes recently.

SLBE web site:  Is mostly done.  Kerry has been recognized for his great work on this.

Drifting Sands Newsletter – Molly McCombs

Roland's climate work will be featured

Other ideas and submissions are welcome.

Adopt A Trail – Molly McCombs:

Adopt-a-Beach:  Could be readily incorporated into this program. Would include all beaches with road access.  A list will be compiled and emailed to our membership.

Crystal River Trail:  This possibility would be guided by the new GMP.

VI. Old Business

2006 Project Requests from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore:

       Natural resource field supplies:
