The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes Board Meeting Wednesday October 11, 2006 9:00a.m. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore HQ Library
I. Roll Call: Jack, Kerry, Roland, John, Eleanor, Chuck, & Tom. Tom U. represented the Park. Patty O'Donnell visited from NW Mich. Council of Govts. II. Additions to the agenda: None. III. Minutes of the last meeting of August 17, 2006: Approved. IV. Treasurers Report (Attached): John reported that all bills have been paid. Report approved. V. Committee Reports ● Report from Park representative: The Park has been busy tallying year-end figures. The Park recently received the State History Award for management of the Port Oneida Historic District. GMP: The latest news letter was mailed yesterday. It includes four main alternatives. (The final plan can be a blend of them.) Park zone types are delineated. Waterwheel canoe livery site restoration: Scoping has begun Planning for Overlook 9: Will be beginning this fall. Glen Haven & Pt. Oneida projects: Their funding has been pushed back. The Park has submitted Glen Haven for approval for fee money use. Planning continues on Port Oneida. DH Day cabin: The roof will be fixed through NPS funding. Trumpeter Swans were reintroduced this fall. The Dechow, Kelderhouse, Peter Burfiend, Esch, and Eitzen Houses have been improved. Interpretation had a good year. Boat ramp: Glen Arbor Twnshp is anxious to move it. They like the Glen Haven site. NPS does not believe Glen Haven is appropriate. Area ROW's are being researched. ● Proposed bike path through the Park Presented by Patty ODonnell, from NW Michigan Council of Governments: They are applying for grants for environmental assessments. They need a 501 (c)(3) organization to be the fiduciary agent to receive the grants. It was felt that this is the sort of thing we are designed to do. A motion to do so was approved. ● Update of two web sitesKerry: Friends web site: No major changes recently. SLBE web site: Is mostly done. Kerry has been recognized for his great work on this. ● Drifting Sands Newsletter Molly McCombs Roland's climate work will be featured Other ideas and submissions are welcome. ● Adopt A Trail Molly McCombs: Adopt-a-Beach: Could be readily incorporated into this program. Would include all beaches with road access. A list will be compiled and emailed to our membership. Crystal River Trail: This possibility would be guided by the new GMP. VI. Old Business ● 2006 Project Requests from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Natural resource field supplies: ● GPS units: We will buy them in the spring, up to $750. John will work with Ken Hyde on details. ● Piping plover monitoring supplies: We will seek donations and work with Park staff to obtain the best deals possible for $1500. ● Non-native plant control supplies: We will provide $1550 as requested. Jack will work with staff on control techniques. ● Defibrillator: We will fund one for $2100. ● Kerry will post the need for further donations on the web site. ● Port Oneida Fair Report Molly & John McCombs: No new developments ● Port Oneida Driving Tour Booklet Kerry Kelly: We got 500 made and have already sold 100 to Cottage Book Store. ENPMA has questioned the quality of this item for sale. We are seeking specific recommendations and exploring options. ● DUNES Bumper Stickers Kerry Kelly We will sell them for $1. We will pursue distribution. We will reimburse Kerry his forwarded costs. ● Glen Haven Tour Booklet Kerry Kelly We have suggested to PHSB that we work together on one. Have not heard back yet. ● Framed Port Oneida Fair posters: Tom U. will check into how they should be used. VII. New Business: None VIII. Other Business: ● Next meeting: 4/18/07 IX. Adjourned, 11:30
