Werner (Old German) Cemetery Fence Replacement  John Erickson has ancestors buried in this cemetery on top of the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan not far from the Miller Barn in Port Oneida. The fence was old and rundown so he donated the money and worked with the Youth Corp to replace the fence this fall. If you go to visit the cemetery, please enter through the gate. It's not locked.

It's a beautiful hike through the woods to an outstanding view of Lake MI and the beach below. You can take the spur trail from the Bay View trail or just drive to the Miller Barn and walk up the trail to the cemetery.

Read some reflections on this project by John Erickson. And we extend a big THANK YOU to John for making this project possible.

Lane Road Beach Access - Cherry Republic donated $5,000 and many volunteer hours to building steps from the 40-foot bluff at the end of Lane Road in Port Oneida. This beach access point was a serious safety hazard for visitors who wanted to get to the beach and the foot traffic over the past few years had caused significant erosion of the bank with several new foot paths being formed by visitors. Cherry Republic, Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, and a crew from the Park Maintenance department worked for five days to build these steps into the side of the bluff. The design of the steps is meant to blend into the existing natural setting.

Bike Trail Project Update
- The Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route Trailway Project has received a $300,000 grant from the DOT Federal Highway Administration to the Michigan Department of Transportation for design and engineering for section 5 of our 25 mile, non-motorized trailway that will generally run parallel with M-22 and M-109 connecting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore facilities from County Road 651 to the Benzie County border on Manning Road just south of Empire. Section 5 is the 4+ mile stretch from Glen Arbor to the Dune Climb. We have applied for a $1 Million construction grant, but a substantial amount of matching funds will need to be raised by local groups.

The section from Glen Haven to the Dune Climb has been cleared for surveying, so you can actually walk the proposed trail and get a sense of it's beauty. more

·     Birding in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – This new booklet will be available in the Visitor Center, Platte River Campground Office, and Cannery boat museum in Glen Haven after June 10. Alice Van Zoeren did a wonderful job of writing and compiling the information for this booklet. If you are a birder or just interested in finding birds in their natural setting, you will want to get this booklet!

DH Day Exhibit - The side room of the Glen Haven General Store is now an exhibit highlighting the life of D. H. Day, the entrepreneur and visionary who came to Glen Haven to manage the cord wood business for the Northern Transportation Company and ended up owning most of Glen Haven and a significant amount of land around the area. He pioneered sustainable lumbering and managed forests, encouraged improved roads, and communication and was instrumental in developing farming and fruit processing in northern Michigan. He led the development of a tourism and resort industry around Glen Lake. The Friends provided $2,200 and several members are working with Park interpretive staff and the Empire Area Museum to develop the exhibit. Dick Kishline built the frame for this stone wall representing the entrances to Day Forest Estates. Dave Taghon and and friends built the wall this summer.

Planer Mill – An historic lumber planer mill has been purchased by the Friends and placed near the Blacksmith shop in Glen Haven. The mill doesn’t work anymore but it is a great teaching tool. You can see how lumber is sized and planed to a smooth finish.

·         DH Day Sawmill – The original DH Day sawmill that was once operated on the shore of Little Glen Lake at the mill pond has been located and will be purchased this summer. We are working with Park staff to determine where it will be located in or near Glen Haven. It will be an operational, demonstration mill. We will need some help dismantling the mill and moving it later this summer. Let me know if you are interested in helping out. kellykj@charter.net.

Adopt-A-Garden – For the second year, the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes is coordinating the volunteers maintaining the gardens at the Lawr Farm in Port Oneida right on M-22 north of Glen Arbor. This year Sharon Oriel is coordinating our activities at the farm.
We need more volunteers to help out
, so if you like to garden and want to help us maintain the beautiful gardens at the Lawr Farm, please contact Sharon at sharon@gathering2.com. A big thanks to Molly McCombs, who got this project started and coordinated activities last year and is taking some time off due to family illness
