Port Oneida History

Tom Van Zoeren has spent many hours interviewing current and former residents of the Port Oneida area to document the history of the area.  The shared memories of people and events bring the history of this farming area alive when you see the faces and activities of the families who lived here.  Visitors who come to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and take the time to drive around the Port Oneida Rural Historic District can begin to imagine what life was like for the farmers who settled here.  Many of the historic farmsteads have been or are being restored.

The complete photo collections, as well as recordings of the interviews and summary outlines of them, are available in the Park library at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center and the Glen Lake Library in Empire. Tom is always on the lookout for leads relating to further Port Oneida area history, photos, and people with first-hand knowledge.  If you have any good leads, please click on "Contact Web Page Editor" at the bottom of this page, or call Tom at 334-4608.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the Leonard Thoreson, Alfred and Loraine (Olsen) Mason and Ruth Ann (Baker) Oleson families for sharing their family photographs and memories so we can have a better appreciation for this part of our history.

The photo collections have been organized to tell the story of each family.  Just click on the family name in the left navigation bar and you may either sequence through the pages or select the ones you might be most interested in from the list on the left.
