Adopt-A-Garden Program
| Volunteers are needed for a new
Friends project, Adopt-A-Garden at the Lawr Farm in the Port Oneida Rural
Historic District of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. A native
plant garden was established several years ago at the Lawr Farm when the
Shielding Tree Nature Center was housed there. Now that the Nature Center is
no longer at the Farm there is interest in maintaining what was started in
the garden with native plants and a butterfly garden as well as expansion
into a heritage garden with examples of food plants the pioneers to the area
grew for survival. |

| Voluntary garden work at the
Lawr Farm will depend on the individuals capability. It can include
weeding, digging , spreading mulch, pulling grass, composting , and
watering. Volunteers are asked to commit an amount of time convenient to
them. A list of jobs to be done will be posted in the chicken house so
volunteers can stop when they have time and complete one or part of the jobs
listed. Volunteer hours will be accumulated under the Volunteer In Parks
Program at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. |
 |
Orientation for this
program will be held Friday May 2, 2008 at the Lawr Farm . Those interested
in volunteering can stop in any time that day from 9a.m. to 3 p.m.
