Ruth’s older sister Lucille was a big help when Fred Baker
began supplying horses to the girls’ camp. "What made it work out was, my
sister Lucille was available and she was a pretty good rider...she was the
riding instructor…so that way he could be sure the horses were handled
correctly."
Lucille
went on to college and became a teacher
at the
Shetland School (near Little Traverse Lake) and other locations. Like her
sister, Lucille married a Coast Guardsman, Jack Barratt. They spent two
years stationed on South Manitou Island. "When his time was up they decided
they would come back on the farm and help with the farming...That was
something they wanted to keep going." The Barratts continue to reside in
the home where Lucille and Ruth were born.
