The Bakers used to pasture their cows in the hills north of
the house, on land now owned by Camp Kohahna and the National Lakeshore.
They would water them along the beach in front of the Schnor farmhouse (now
the Camp Kohahna Office). Watering and getting the cows in the evening was
one of the Baker girls’ jobs. The Bakers had a handy dog named Shep.
"You'd tell him, 'Go get the cows, and usually he'd go find them and bring
them down."
