Fred Baker knew how to farm from his upbringing on a farm in northern Illinois, and he "tried to do things in a little bit different way" from the other farmers up here.  "They used to first refer to me as that crazy Baker guy."  He made his  fields bigger, and was an early practitioner of crop rotation and erosion control.
