Fred Baker
began in Port Oneida with a general farm. Most crops were consumed on the
farm, though Ruth remembers horse-drawn wagonloads of potatoes being hauled
to market at Bodus.
When Camp
Kohahna began operations, Fred began selling dairy products to them. During
winters he sold to the Leelanau School. The girls’ camp also provided an
opportunity to earn cash by raising saddle horses for the girls to ride.
The house
began as a much smaller cabin built by the Kelderhouse family. The road it
faced ran between the house and the lake. After a great storm washed the
road out, it was moved to its present location.
