Born in Benzie
County, Alfred left home at the age of 14 and came to the Good Harbor
area. A jack of all trades, Alfred at various times ran the former D.H. Day
Farm, built the Wayside Dairy Freeze, operated Shalda’s Store, and did a
variety of work at Leelanau and Glen Lake Schools. His large vegetable
garden was always a show-piece. Seen here with Patches. “Wherever Alfred
went, Patches went.”
