Two of Charles and Hattie
Olsen’s granddaughters (Orville’s daughters) behind the big house, with
(L-R) the smoke house; a rose trellis; two dog houses; the privy; and “the
little house” in the background. Note the lack of trees on the hill, now
heavily wooded. The virgin forest of the area was clear-cut during the late
1800’s-early 1900’s. Initially it was sold as cordwood to fuel passing
steamships. Later it went to the Port Oneida sawmill and was shipped to
build cities around the Great Lakes.
